Carmen speaks with Denny Clifford from Embark

Founded in 2014, Embark DC’s concept was sparked by Captain Denny’s love for taking friends and family out on the Potomac. The passengers experienced the nation’s capital from a unique perspective and were fascinated by the history of our country and founding fathers. The demand for cruises for friends quickly increased and it became clear this needed to be opened up to others. It’s not just a boat ride, it’s a local experience like no other.

An Open Mind to experience something Unique

I know this may sound cheesy, but seriously... fine with an open mind. You have one weekend to visit a new place so make the most out of it. Try things you haven’t yet done and be willing to explore places you normally wouldn’t

Clothes. For some this is the fun part and others this is the most dreadful part. Either way, we’ve got you covered. We encourage making this easy on yourself. It’s just a weekend and while we know you want to look cute, try to relax. Focus more on the living part and less on the what you look like. Get comfy, but cute: a quick get ready routine. So, how do you pack light and gather comfy/ cute outfits? With 3-4 tops, 3 different bottoms (jeans, skirt, etc), 1 dress, 2 different shoe options, and 1 purse. Keep the accessories light but interchangeable to really help you mix it up. See how you can get creative with a scarf!

Our biggest tip? Avoiding excess. It’s just one weekend. You won’t need much as where you’re staying should have majority of it and guess what? If you forget something, I’m sure there’s a store nearby. If not, you’ll soon be back home because... it’s just one weekend.

Focus on having fun. Be spontaneous, fearless, and bold!

Booking for a place to have your next weekend getaway?

Lending A Helping Hand

"My hope still is to leave the world a bit better than when I got here." -Jim Henson

Everyday we pour into the people around us from family, friends, guest who stay at our home, strangers in the store... everyone. It's our mission to be the change. Be the kindness. Show the love.Be the experience of human connection that make all guests forget about the day to day worries of the world.

We start small by making it an everyday thing... even if it's just a smile or a hug.

We also take it a step further. Together, The Nelsons created a non profit. The non-profit Strive To Tri is the name and the mission is "to combat childhood obesity by preparing youths to participate in youth-friendly triathlon events, healthier nutritional habits and overall improved fitness." We teach kids to strive through stress free, kid-friendly aquathon events that build up to an interest in job opportunities in swim camp counseling, lifeguarding and ultimately introduction into the triathlon sport.

The change and natural progress we see in the children we inspire is exactly why we began STRIVE. We're giving them something positive in their life that is creating both emotional, mental toughness and physical strength to plan goals and perseverance toward attaining those goals.

They leave the race feeling confident and happy. Proving to themselves that they can follow through and their body is made for more is the purpose of all of this. We created STRIVE to change kids lives. To create a new found love for being outside and being active. To motivate young adults to being and doing more.

STRIVE has been something for us at The Nelson Manor that we have poured our hearts into and will continue to do so until we see every child cross that finish line.

Family Fun Activities

Here at The Nelson Manor we are all about family. We love when families book our home and with the Holidays in full swing we plan to see many families. Our house stays busy this time of year.

With that being said, we thought it was a must to make a post about family activities to do at home. How nice would it be to have the fireplace going, the sound of laughter, and the feeling of your family having a good time? Oh, so so nice.

  • Get out the board games! That's right. Have games galore and don't take it too seriously. Have some fun!!
  • Grab all the movies. Pop all the popcorn. Buy all the candy. Load up on blankets. Annnnnd, have a movie night!
  • Have everyone in the family say what they are thankful for.
  • Do a spontaneous photo shoot! Grab your smart phones and snap away. These will be sweet to look back on.
  • Cook a meal together.
  • Start a pillow fight.
  • Have the all the kids do a performance.
  • No board games from earlier? That's ok. Smart phones are filled with games these days.
  • Go for a walk around the neighborhood.
  • Play in the backyard.
  • Make s'mores by the fire at night.

Most importantly, remember to laugh. The whole point is to just have fun. Be ok with staying cozy inside the home. There's so many things you all can do as a family.

Don't forget...

Need a place to gather everyone under roof? The Nelson Manor has your back. We have plenty of space with two stories, a furnished basement, pool, and beautiful backyard oasis. You are probably not even going to want to leave! It's that good. The best part? We offer concierge services so we can bring a chef to the house so the family doesn't have to lift a finger. We can bring a massage therapist as well. This is a type to relax, unwind, and have fun. We are going to make that happen for you and your family!
